WSIS

Presentation

Organised under the high patronage of the Secretary General of the United Nations, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) aims to give all the key decision makers a chance to meet in order to exchange ideas on the impact and hopes of the information society.

The WSIS not only involves governments, but also key players from the private sector, civil society, NGOs, the media and, of course, the United Nations family.

note The aim of the WSIS is to establish a clear policy for the development of an information society that takes account of all the interests at stake, as well as a concrete action plan that will allow these objectives to be attained.

The summit took place in two phases: the first in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2003, the second in Tunis from 16 to 18 November 2005.

AFNIC's specific contribution

AFNIC is fully conscious of the global nature of the Internet, but it runs a service aimed at a local community. It therefore holds a privileged position when it comes to questions of "governance", as well as concrete day-to-day experience of the deployment of one of the Internet's fundamental services: DNS.

For all these issues, AFNIC wishes to be seen as a constructive force by its contacts and partners, be they public or private. It participates in the WSIS through its initiatives and recommendations, in particular at national level:
