What is a RSS or an Atom feed?
RSS means Rich Summary Site or Really Simple Syndication.
A RSS feed is an XML file that provides some information such as the title, the date and the summary of a press release.
This format is used to communicate information in a dynamic way from a website to others. This is called syndication: the target website incorporates the information of the source website and display them with its own template.
RSS also allows to read information without visiting website(s).
Atom is another syndication format and offers the same uses than RSS. The benefit of this format is to be more flexible and to be standardised by the IETF
(RFC 4287).
How to read feeds?
You need a "feed reader" or an "aggregator".
You can download on-line one of your choice for free. Some web browsers such Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera come by default
with a reader or an aggregator.
