ccTLDs: geographical domains
There are more than 240 ccTLDs (country code Top Level Domains), the geographical internet domains made up of two letters.
History of ccTLDs
To improve the international exchanges of goods and information,
the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established in 1974
an international country code standard to identify names of countries or geographical parts of the world (post codes...). This standard is ISO 3166.
The two-letters version of ISO 3166 (3166-1) are used to establish the ccTLDs list, the geographical internet domains in two letters.
For example, ISO code for France is FR and its ccTLD is .fr.
