Change of registrar

You can request a change of registrar in accordance with the contractual obligations binding both parties.
This change consists in transfering the administrative and technical management of your domain name to another registrar.

How to proceed?

When your registrar is still on activity

  1. You are free to choose a new AFNIC registrar to entrust it with the management of your domain name.

  2. Then transmit your request to your new registrar.
Indeed the registrar change request (transfer) is made by the new registrar.
The new registrar must ensure that the transfer does not in any way affect your ownership of the domain name: You must give your auth_info to the incoming registrar to validate your request.

  3. What is auth_info?
The auth_info is a password associated with a domain name.
This password is generated by the registrar itself when registering a .fr or .re domain name.
The auh_info must be given to the holder by the registrar.
The holder use this password to validate its holder's implication in some operations such as a registrar change request (transfer).

  4. At the same time, you must inform your former registrar of your intention to transfer the domain name, by registered letter with confirmation of receipt.

  5. Once the transfer request is received by AFNIC, your former registrar -the outgoing registrar- receives a registrar change request notification.
    • If the outgoing registrar accepts within 8 days, the registrar change is immediately validated.
    • If the outgoing registrar refuses within 8 days, the total duration of the registrar change operation is extended to 22 days before validation.
The outgoing registrar may still accept the transfer before the 22 days.
    • If the outgoing registrar does not react within 8 days, the registrar change is immediately validated at the end of the 8 days.

When your registrar is about to end its activity or ended it

  1. If your registrar ends its activity for any reason, the registrar must inform you so that you can contact another registrar for your domain name. AFNIC will also contact you directly to inform you that you must find a new registrar winthin a month (1) (from the reception of the AFNIC letter).

  2. AFNIC puts a quick procedure of transfer in place: your domain name is automatically transferred without delay to your new registrar (of your choice or chosen to take over the activity of the defaulting registrar).

Particular case: web site and domain name hosting

Please do not confuse the domain name hosting with the web site hosting. Changing the ISP that hosts your web site does not necessarily mean changing the registrar that hosts your domain name.
